What is Book Worms?
Book Worms is a tutoring program for at risk rugby players. The program is dedicated to helping young athletes in our program remain in school, increase their grades and academic achievement, and feel proficient and confident on and off the field.
Who are the Worms?
The Westerville Rugby Club was established in 1995 and since then has won eight state championships, and finished three times as National Runners-up. More importantly, the program provides an after-school activity that teaches teamwork, responsibility, confidence, work ethics, and sportsmanship. We pride ourselves on building character and helping develop responsible young citizens that have the confidence to reach their potential. Each spring, the Worms boast a roster exceeding 100 high school and middle school athletes and the club is still growing. We hope to harness this success to motivate young adults to excel in both academics and athletics.
How does it work?
The program is based on inclusion. We believe that struggling athletes should not be prevented from extra-curricular athletics, but encouraged to participate while learning to improve their academic lives. Preventing students from extra-curricular activities based on academics, risks alienating the student from the school community completely.
Book Worms will accept donations to help fund specialized tutoring for committed rugby players. Half of each donation goes directly towards purchasing specialized tutoring for struggling students that meet the program’s eligibility requirements. The remaining portion of the donation is applied to the Westerville Rugby Club’s general operating fund.
Eligibility
A student-athlete’s eligibility for the program will be based on the following criteria:
- Grade point average that drops below 2.0
- 100% participation with the Westerville Rugby Club
